May 2003: The Benefits of a Custom Ring Binder

We’re frequently asked by customers why they should choose a custom ring binder for their presentation needs rather than an off-the-shelf binder from an office supply store. The difficulty in answering this question is that advantages often vary based on the specific requirements of the customer and the application. We often start by asking each customer one simple question: "How important is the presentation of your materials to you and other users?" Unless they say "Not at all" - which is rarely the case - then we will most likely be able to help them design an attractive custom binder that won’t break their budget or blow their schedule.

Here are some answers to a couple other "frequently-asked questions" on the custom binder production process:

It would be nice to match my binder to our corporate colors. I’d also like them to hold more than just paper. What’s possible when it comes to customizing binders?

The generic binders you find at office supply stores are often capable of holding only paper and a thin pamphlet tucked into a flap inside a cover. Many of today’s ring binder applications require binders to be much more versatile than that. At Eckhart & Company, we offer dozens of options for the binder’s interior. Pockets can be created to hold books, electronic media such as CD’s and DVD’s, business cards and many other items. Need to hold jewel cases, audio or video cassettes? Plastic trays can be placed inside either cover to hold these items.

Matching corporate colors or placing other designs on binders is a breeze. There are literally hundreds of colors and textures to choose from. Do you have a logo or image you’d like to include? Screen printing, foil stamping, embossing or debossing - also available in many colors and styles - give you plenty of creative freedom. Don’t forget about ring size and style, either. Generic binders leave with you few options here. It can look silly to place just 50 sheets into a 2" binder. Likewise, it can be annoying for users to try turning 300 pages in a thin 1" binder. At Eckhart & Company, we’ll help you match the needs of your project with an appropriate ring size and style.

I’d like to get custom ring binders for an upcoming proposal, but I need them pretty quickly. Wouldn’t it be faster and cheaper to just get them from an office supply store?

Like most busy professionals, your time is valuable. Before you head over to that office supply store, consider the amount of time it will take you to create these binders. If you need several hundred binders, you need to determine how you’ll get them to your home or office. Once you have them, you’ll need to print enough copies of your project to fill them. Don’t forget to stock up on printer cartridges if you do the printing yourself, or format your sheets properly for printing and binder insertion. The last thing you want to do is cut off any words or a portion of the CEO’s picture. Then there’s the binder cover and spine to design and print, inserting the sheets into the binder…

The Eckhart Advantage

As you can see, the process of creating and filling ring binders is not as quick and easy as you think. Once you consider the amount of time it would take for you to do it yourself, the decision to outsource becomes an obvious one. At Eckhart & Company, we can help you create binders that are properly customized for your needs and your budget, saving you valuable time, unnecessary hassle - and possibly even a little money!
