July 2003: Calendars

Believe it or not, calendar planning season is almost here. That makes this the perfect time to go over some of your best design ideas with your clients. To get you going, here are a few design and planning tips to keep in mind.

Select a Binding Style:

Three mechanical binding styles - Wire-O, plastic spiral  and spiral wire - are ideal binding solutions for calendars. Pages can be flipped  360 degrees for easy use on either wall or desk calendar applications. Binding  elements for all three styles are available in many colors to complement your design.

Wire-O binding offers a few additional advantages. A wire calendar hanger can be placed between two separate banks of wire elements to create an attractive wall hanging option. Also, since Wire-O binding doesn’t “step up” like plastic spiral and spiral wire binding, crossover images and text will line up properly when the calendar is displayed.

Plenty of Design Possibilities:

Calendars stay in the hands of your customers (and those of their customers as well) for an entire year, making them great “show-me” pieces. Multiple stocks and panel sizes, foldout panels, die cuts and easel backs are just a few of the many binding and finishing options that can enhance both the appearance and functionality of your calendars.

Planning Tip:

By their nature, calendars have a lot of information  packed onto them. For that reason, it’s important  to leave a sufficient  margin so that the binding holes do not punch into copy or images. We recommend a margin of at least 3/8” between the binding edge and the outside edge of the punched holes.
