March 2004: Large Diameter Spiral Wire Binding
When planning a thick book application, it's important to find a binding solution that fits the needs of the application. Thick book applications such as teacher's manuals, instruction books and directories require a binding style that's durable and easy to use. While Wire-O and perfect binding are commonly considered for these types of projects, spiral wire binding is often left out of the discussion. That's because large-diameter spiral wire binding is typically performed as a semi-automatic process, making it a costly and time-consuming option.
At Eckhart and Company, we're able to perform large-diameter spiral wire binding (coils of up to 2") automatically. That allows us to offer you fast turnarounds and competitive pricing on your thick book applications. Here are a few more helpful tips regarding large-diameter spiral wire binding at Eckhart and Co.:
The Process
The first step in Eckhart and Company's large-diameter spiral wire binding process is to form the coils from spooled wire. We then insert the wire through holes punched in the book block and crimp both ends of the wire - automatically. The result is a production solution that's both efficient and economical, making large-diameter spiral wire binding an attractive option for both medium and long runs.
At Eckhart and Company, we can perform automatic spiral wire binding with coil diameters up to 2", which is sufficient for books bulking up to 1-3/4".
Design Considerations
- Large-diameter spiral wire binding applications require holes to be placed a little further in from the binding edge than thinner books. We also use a thicker-gauge wire on large-diameter projects for added strength and durability. For those reasons, be sure to leave at least a 3/8" margin between your copy and the trimmed binding edge.
