THIS MONTH'S TOPIC: TAKE ADVANTAGE OF WIRE-O BINDING

For a classic look with the ultimate in flexibility and function, you can't beat Wire-O binding. Its layflat capability and range of cover and stock options means it can include almost anything and be used for any purpose.

Wire-O binding allows your projects to turn 360 degrees on any page, making it perfect for calendars, cookbooks, manuals and much more. And unlike other mechanical binding styles, Wire-O bound books eliminate the 'step-up' from one page to the next that can ruin crossover images. That allows maps and complex technical drawings to be spread over both pages without disrupting their functionality.

The options for Wire-O designs are nearly limitless. With Wire-O, your designs can include stocks of various finishes and styles as well as foldouts and other touches that can accentuate your pieces. This versatile binding style is also available in a variety of colors, including PMS matched colors, to compliment your specific designs.

In addition to leaving the binding elements exposed and attaching a cover to either end of the signature, a wide range of cover styles are available for Wire-O binding. Cased-in Wire-O is a great look that creates a hard cover to provide protection to the binding elements. Fully-concealed Wire-O covers wrap around the book, using a series of scores to form the spine and inside back cover. When closed, the wire elements are hidden from view. Semi-concealed Wire-O covers partially obscure the binding, only making it visible through the back cover. All of these options retain the layflat capability of Wire-O binding and allow you to print onto the spine.

Layout Tip: Avoid Punching Into Text and Images

For projects using 3:1 wire, leave a margin of 3/8" from the spine. For 2:1 Wire-O books, leave at least ½" margin.

Layout tip: Avoid punching holes into your text or graphics by providing ample margin on the punched edge. This is a common mistake of designers who fail to consider the space Wire-O punches require. For projects using 3:1 wire, leave a margin of 3/8" from the spine. For 2:1 Wire-O books, leave at least ½" margin.
