September 2004: Toteboxes

At Eckhart & Company, we’re constantly striving to deliver new information packaging styles to give customers more options. Toteboxes combine the protection and functionality of slipcases and slantcases with the take-anywhere convenience of lid closures and handles for carrying. Toteboxes are ideal for carrying several products of different shapes and sizes, such as a perfect-bound book and a collection of multimedia discs.

Lid and Handle Possibilities
Lids are typically designed to match the rest of the tote box, and are thus constructed and decorated using the same materials and processes. Lids are usually attached to the box by riveting the lid to the box, although some only require gluing.

There are also a host of closure options for totebox lids. Metal snaps and Velcro strips are economical closures and among the most popular, while a range of handsome interlocking pieces (similar to those found on luggage) can also be used.

Handles can be applied to the top of the lid or attached to the sides of the box using rivets. Plastic strips with a T-shape on either end can be inserted into die-cut holes in the lid for a simple yet durable handle design. Handles are available in a variety of materials, shapes and colors to match the design of your toteboxes.

This totebox design includes a plastic handle attached to the lid via die-cut slots. This efficient design is ideal for most light-duty totebox applications.

Design tip 1: If your toteboxes will be designed to hold books or binders snugly, consider recessing the front opening with a slant cut. This design allows for easy removal of your items, and allows the box to double as a library of information with easy access.

Design tip 2: For more efficient and cost-effective production, be sure the lid flap riveted to the back of the totebox is the same size and dimension as the flap that falls over the front. This allows Eckhart & Company to produce your toteboxes with minimal handwork, which can speed up turnaround and reduce costs.
