May 2007- Accurate Estimates Yield Smooth Production
The first and most important step in any post press project is obtaining an accurate estimate. Doing so involves the exchange of as many essential project details as possible. Complete details not only save time by avoiding back-and-forth communication, but they yield a smooth, worry-free production process.
Keep the following tips in mind to help you gather all the information you’ll need to receive an accurate estimate.

Focus on the Basics
Begin with the basics such as quantity, number of forms, flat and final trim sizes. The details of your paper stock should also be noted, including the weight, finish and grain direction. In addition, be sure to detail exactly how your project will be furnished, and list each process needed to achieve your finished product.

Don’t Forget Shipping Details
Complete shipping and packing instructions are among the most frequently-overlooked details when requesting an estimate. Provide all shipping breakout quantities and destination addresses for the production run and to fulfill any sample requests. Packing instructions should include the packing method (such as skids, gaylords or boxes), the quantity per box if specified, any special labeling requirements and the number of sample books to be held out for separate shipment.

Select Materials for Special Operations
If your project will require the use additional materials, such as cover wraps for case binding or ring binder applications, vinyl for information packaging or binders, foil for stamping and film for laminating, they will need to be selected during the estimating stage. Although Eckhart and Company stocks a wide selection of these and other materials, special requests may need to be ordered in advance of your production date.
Beginning the material selection process early also gives us a chance to suggest lower-cost options or order samples to help you make the best choice for your applications.
